teenager
Sue asked:

When I was a teenager it was $10 a week for me and most of my friends. I’m just curious as to what it is today for a teenager from a middle class family?

When I was a kid, I got $.40/week! As a teenager, I baby-sat for money.

I don’t give my 14-year-old an allowance ’cause I don’t think it’s correct to pay him for things that he should do anyway. I expect him to help me out when I ask him to. He will, on occasion, baby-sit his little brother for money and I think that’s fair. He keeps the balance in his mind and when I have the $$ and he wants something, I do my best to make sure he gets it.

I got paid $25 every 2 weeks for keeping the house clean for my parents.

Babysitting: $10 for a base fee (and 1st hour) +$5 each extra hour.

And I could haggle prices for random chores (pulling weeds, shoveling snow, etc.)

0, just “WHY DIDN’T YOU GET AN A+, YOU’RE SMARTER THAN AN A-”

I grew up poor so I got no allowance. I had to work for my spending money and to chip in for the bills. For a middle class family with some disposable income, I think $20 a week would be reasonable with extra incentives for extra work.

I’ll tell you what I did with my kids and it seemed to work pretty well if you stick to it. First you assign what you feel is the proper salary for the chores around the house. Maybe a dollar for each time they take out the trash or make up their bed or $5.00 for cleaning the bathroom or whatever. Then come up with a total amount for the weeks work. Say it totals out to be $20.00. At the first of each week you’d give them their $20.00. Yes I said at the first of the week. As the week goes on you make them pay you back for what chores they didn’t do. The kid learns a valuable lesson and you are bound to save some money.
