teenager
Angela ♠ asked:

I’m an Australian redhead teenager.
What should I expect if I move to England?
Is it true that they don’t like redheads? Do you really call redheads “ginger”?
What should I expect from the school?
Will I fit in?

Some people call people with red hair nasty names as both my sister have red hair and get called names.
If you talk to people they will talk back to you as my sisters are friends with lots of people.

Go to Scotland. You will fit in there as a rusty nut no worries. During the 19th century many of the victims of the brit land clearances went out to Australia, such as from Raasay so you will probably find that your cultural roots are in Scotland or Ireland. The brits call abusive names at everyone cos they are of no specific cultural group, identity or tribe themselves. I have a neice who is an aussie born and is living in Edinburgh . She loves the place and finds the people very accepting. So go for Scotland instead.

Well yes you might get referred to as ginger because to us, that is another term to describe the hair colour.
I can’t guarantee unfortunately that you won’t get any negative comments made about your hair colour, but generally people don’t care what colour someones hair is =]

You might get the odd bit of “Ginger Abuse” but just laugh it off – its harmless! We have loads of gingers in our college class – they call each other “Ginge” lol – I wouldn’t worry about it – its not a big deal – its not like its really horrid bullying like i suffered (having a knife held to throat).

I got called ‘ginger’ or ‘ginge’, but only ever in an affectionate way.

I live in England and I have never experienced any nastiness about having red hair. It is very much appreciated – I get compliments on my hair colour all the time. People love my hair!

No, it isn’t true they don’t like redheads. No different from any other country.
